New Cutting-Edge Investigative News Series

Premieres Sunday November 30 at 6:30pm ET

With Emmy Award Winning Journalist Mary Garofalo

(November 25, 2008) From the streets of Canada comes 16:9 (sixteen by nine), a gritty investigative news series that profiles the lives of ordinary Canadians caught in extraordinary circumstances. Emmy Award winning journalist Mary Garofalo, together with Global News and Global National reporters from across Canada and around the world, hit the ground running to uncover the real stories behind the headlines.

Beginning Sunday, November 30 – 6:30 pm ET on Global, 16:9 kicks off with the shocking story of accused murderer Mark Twitchell. The Edmonton-based filmmaker caused a media sensation when reports surfaced that Twitchell’s fascination with the hit television drama, Dexter may have inspired his alleged crime. The premiere episode features the worldwide exclusive footage of Twitchell’s now infamous film that eerily parallels his murder charge.

“16:9 goes beyond the surface, digging deeper into current affairs that truly resonate with Canadians,” said Troy Reeb, SVP of News and Current Affairs, Canwest Broadcasting. “We’re very excited to launch this series with an amazing roster of expert reporters led by Mary Garofalo, whose experience in investigative news is absolutely outstanding.”

Toronto native Mary Garofalo is no stranger to getting the hard hitting facts, earning a reputation as one of the toughest reporters in New York City. As head of the investigative unit for Fox News in New York and former reporter and weekend anchor of A Current Affair, Mary’s investigations have landed con artists in jail, exposed corruption and uncovered numerous scams. Mary makes her return home for the first time since moving south of the border.

“It’s great to be back, and I’m looking forward to working with the Global team,” said Mary Garofalo. “We are ready and willing to go the extra distance to get the answers the viewers want and deserve to know.”

Displaying a raw, vibrant feel, 16:9, will be presented on-location from the streets across Canada. The series investigates stories in a fast-paced weekly, half hour, video-driven format. The program title is inspired by the 16:9 aspect ratio for widescreen, high definition television, and promises each week to deliver audiences “The Bigger Picture”
