Canadian tops ratings again with 1.5m viewers

Canadian Idol is back at the top of charts. The non-simulcast Season 6 premiere on CTV attracted 1.5 million viewers, winning the night in all demos and attracting 35% more viewers than the next most-watched program last night, Moment of Truth (CTV/FOX, 1.1 million). The audience grew in its second half-hour, peaking with 1.7 million viewers at 9:50 p.m.

Last night’s Canadian Idol episode becomes the most-watched, non-sports program on Canadian television since the summer season began May 26. The season premiere leads summer’s other top series, including So You Think You Can Dance (#2, CTV/FOX, 1.2 million), Million Dollar Password (#3, CTV/CBS, 1.1 million) and Moment of Truth (#4, CTV/FOX, 1 million).

At 9 p.m. on CTV, Canadian Idol delivered more than double the audience of CBC (Just for Laughs, 387,000) and Global (The Unit, 361,000) combined.

Canadian Idol continues next week with two episodes on Monday and Tuesday. Audition highlights from Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver are featured next Monday, June 9 at 9 p.m. ET on CTV with auditions from Hamilton, Ottawa, St. John’s, Halifax and Idol’s first-ever online submissions featured the following night, Tuesday, June 10 at 9 p.m.
