(Toronto, October 15, 2007) Global National with Kevin Newman, Canada’s most-watched national newscast, has been named Best Newscast at the 22nd Annual Gemini Awards. In addition, Global Television’s “Global Currents” was awarded Best Documentary Series for its 2006 premiere season. Select news awards were handed out earlier this evening at a gala event at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto.

“It is a huge honour for us to receive this recognition from our industry peers and the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television,” said Steve Wyatt, Global Television’s Senior Vice-President of News and Information. “This confirms what the majority of news viewers already know, that Global National with Kevin Newman is the best national newscast in the country. We’re extremely proud of what our Global National news team have achieved and the hard work they put in each and everyday.”

Global National received the Best Newscast Award for its stellar newscasts including its October 9, 2006 broadcast where two-time Gemini Award winner Kevin Newman anchored live, and on-location from the front lines of Afghanistan, bringing viewers first-hand insight and perspective on Canada’s part in the war against terror.

Also winning for the first time, highly-acclaimed “Global Currents” was named Best Documentary Series for its fall 2006 premiere season, hosted by anchor Kevin Newman. The weekly, one-hour, independently-produced documentary series features the talents of Canada’s best socio-political, environmental, humanist and scientific documentary filmmakers. Documentaries in the first season included “Greenpeace: Making a Stand,” “Healthcare 911,” “Damage Done: The Drug War Odyssey,” and “Breaking Ranks.”

“On the heels of our first successful season, we are thrilled to have Global Currents recognized by the Academy as Best Documentary Series,” said Christine Shipton, Vice-President of Original Programming. “We are so proud to have partnered with some of the most talented independent producers in our country to bring these important social issues to the forefront for all Canadians.”

The Best News Anchor award, of which Kevin Newman is nominated, will be handed out on October 28th at the main gala in Regina.
