June 2007

Last night it was the turn for 11 guys. Tonight, it’s the ladies turn to turn up the heat.

Who is going to be able to connect emotionally with the song tonight? Farley thinks that it is far more important to capture the attention and win over the country now as opposed to the judges.

Zach thinks that when people vote they need to think about what connects them with themselves and what they stand for as opposed to whether or not they can sing six octaves because that’s not why you buy an album.

It’s going to be a great night of great songs. Kicking it off is Tara Oram.

Tara Oram
Martina McBride - (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden - Single - (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden
It certainly didn’t have the twang that we’d heard in the theatre round but it was still country. The judges all liked it. Tara converses with them during their critique and acknowledges her fans in the audience. She’s great!

Martha Joy
Aerosmith - Armageddon - The Album - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing
I really like Martha’s performance. By far the best vocal performance we’ve heard from any of the top 22 so far. Farley acknowledges that she’s one of the best academic singers in the competition but would like to see some vulnerability.

Montana Martin Iles
The Used - The Bird and the Worm - Single - The Bird and the Worm The Bird and the Worm
I loved that! What an intense performance. Zach said it was the best performance he’s ever seen since he’s been on the show. What a fantastic performer. The judges just love her to bits.

Kamila Miller
Mary J. Blige - My Life - I'm Going Down I’m Going Down
Kamila is now going to be represented on Canadian Idol as Mila as to avoid confusion with Khalila. Her performance didn’t wow me. Her hair was cool and big though. Zach is all over her star vibe. Jake thought it was really empassioned. Farley thought she represented herself really well. Sass loved the joy she exuded.

Maud Coussa-Jandl
The Cranberries - The Cranberries: Stars - The Best of 1992-2002 - Dreams Dreams
Really reminiscent of The Cranberries with a nice french tone to it. Jake says she needs to find her own voice. She’s got an absolutely gorgeous smile.

Annika Odegard
Jessica Andrews - Who I Am - Helplessly, Hopelessly Helplessly, Hopelessly
I didn’t think I was going to like it, but I did. Farley thought that she didn’t take a risk. Sass thought she sang it too low. Zach thought it was a bit pageanty.

Naomi-Joy Blackhall
Whitesnake - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Whitesnake - Judgement Day Judgement Day
The song started well and she rocked it out but the last half was pretty pitchy. The judges thought it looked great but agree it was really pitchy.

Christine Hanlon
Sarah McLachlan - Mirrorball - Possession Possession
Zach hated it. Jake thought there were some nice moments but she didn’t find the groove or get in the pocket with the song. Sass and Farley both were wondering where the edge was that they loved during her audition.

Scarlett Burke
Whitney Houston - My Love Is Your Love - I Learned from the Best I Learned from the Best
It was pretty average. She seemed fairly timid on stage and seemed as though she was holding back. The judges thought she was a little weak. Jake suggested she didn’t sing Whitney. Good call.

Khalila G
P!nk - M!ssundaztood - Family Portrait Family Portrait
It was ok. Farley loved it. Sass said she relit the fire that went out during the last three performances. Zach thought it was great. Jake thought she was in her element and was believeable.

Carly Rae Jepsen
Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On Put Your Records On
Carly is one smart girl. Sitting on a stool being accompanied by an acoustic guitarist. The judges enjoyed it. Zach is sold on her being in the top 10. Jake says she was close to tapping into the vulnerability that she showed in the top 100.

Here are the voting numbers.

What did you think of Tara Oram’s Top 22 Performance on Canadian Idol?

What are the Canadian Idol voting numbers?

Tonight’s voting details are below:

Mitch MacDonald
Yael Naïm - Yael Naïm - Paris Paris
Where We Begin (Lyrics)
Bread - The Best of Bread - If If

Theo Tams
Jann Arden - Greatest Hurts: The Best of Jann Arden - Good Mother Good Mother
Sing (Lyrics)
Foreigner - No End In Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner (Remastered) - I Want to Know What Love Is I Want To Know What Love Is

We found them all over the country. They were selected from thousands auditioning for a shot at a singing career. They made it to Toronto and they endured a week of relentless pressure as they worked to hear the judges say one thing. “You’re in the Top 22”

Tonight, the guys perform on the first live show of Canadian Idol 2007. Tomorrow night it’s the girls. Then on Wednesday 2 guys and 2 girls will be sent packing back from whence they came.

The judges are in the house of course. Jake Gold. Farley Flex. Sass Jordan and Zach Werner.

Before the guys get their chance to sing, we’re introduced to the newest member of the Top 22 – Scarlett Burke – who is replacing Ritchea Hodge.

Jaydee Bixby

Chuck Berry - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Blues Rock Songbook - Johnny B. Goode
Johnny B. Goode

It was a good performance. Jake wished it was something from the last three decades. Farley is a big fan of his voice. Zach thinks he’s just so pretty.

Clifton Murray

Edwin McCain - Misguided Roses - I'll Be
I’ll Be

Farley thought it was good. Zach thought it was old school Idol cheese-o-rama. Jake didn’t feel like he meant it.
Clifton has starred in Boston Legal and has just been in a movie with Amanda Bynes called She’s the Man. He’s the guy who said he wanted to be “The Next American Idol” during theatre round.

Derek Hoffman

The All-American Rejects - Move Along - Move Along
Move Along

This is awful. Bye Bye Derek. The judges are kind of nice when it was complete and utter rubbish.

Justyn Wesley

Marvin Gaye - In the Groove (I Heard It Through the Grapevine) - Some Kind of Wonderful
Some Kind of Wonderful

It was ok but the judges thought it was like listening to a wedding singer.

Dwight d’Eon

Creme & Godley - The Very Best of 10cc - Cry

The judges liked it. Sass appreciates his intensity but thinks he pushes too hard. Zach thinks he’s a real contender.

Greg Neufeld

Creme & Godley - The Very Best of 10cc - Cry
This Love

This is a great song but it kind of feels a little empty. His dancing consists of twisting his ankles backwards and forwards and that’s about it. Sass says it’s no longer the bunny hop but the greggy hop. Zach thought it was the bomb and that he killed it. Jake thinks he’s the guy. I’m not so sure.

Tyler Mullendore

The Rolling Stones - Jump Back: The Best of the Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Brown Sugar

Tyler Rocks. He’s totally in his element doing the stones. Again, the judges love him and how unique it is. He is such a rockstar. Farley says he’s an unchained melody.

Andrew Austin

George Michael - Listen Without Prejudice - Freedom

It was ok but he’s no George Michael. Zach doesn’t think he’s ready for Canadian Idol. Jake disagrees and thought it was good. Farley says he can sing better than he did. Sass thought there was a lack of charisma.

Matt Rapley

Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life - Isn't She Lovely
Isn’t She Lovely

How many versions of this song are we going to hear on Idol? Seriously. It’s overdone. Over-rated. And overdone. Matt could have picked a much better song. Jake thought it was great vocally but lacking in charisma. Farley thought he was a monster on the stage. Sass loves his style. Zach thinks he should be there till the very end.

Brian Melo

The Watchmen - Silent Radar - Stereo

The judges think he’s absolutely top ten material.

Liam Styles Chang

The Misfits - Project 1950 - This Magic Moment
This Magic Moment

It was ok but his voice was kind of boring. Sass calls him Liam the Dree-am. Zach liked it. Jake thought he took an old song and put a modern spin on it and says it was the performance of the night. Farley thought the performance was flawless.
